چکیده

We report the detection of CO(3!2) emission from the submillimeter{selected hyperluminous galaxy SMM 02399{0136. This galaxy is the brightest source detected in the recent SCUBA surveys of the submillimeter sky. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identiied as a narrow-line AGN/starburst galaxy at z = 2:8. The CO emission is unresolved, < 5 00 , and is coincident in redshift and position with the optical counterpart. The molecular gas mass derived from the CO observations is 8 10 10 h ?2 75 M , after correcting for a lensing ampliication factor of 2.5. The large CO luminosity suggests that a signiicant fraction of the infrared luminosity of SMM 02399{0136 arises from star formation. The high inferred star{formation rate of 10 3 M yr ?1 and the large gaseous reservoir may suggest that we are seeing the formation phase of a massive galaxy. Future CO observations of other galaxies detected in deep submillimeter surveys will test the generality of these conclusions for the bulk of the faint submillimeter population.

Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 10/09/06 GOODS 850-5 — A Z> 4 GALAXY DISCOVERED IN THE SUBMILLIMETER?

We report an SMA interferometric identification of a bright submillimeter source, GOODS 850-5. This source is one of the brightest 850 μm sources in the GOODS-N but is extremely faint at all other wavelengths. It is not detected in the GOODS HST ACS images and only shows a weak 2 σ signal at 1.4 GHz. It is detected in the Spitzer IRAC bands and the MIPS 24 μm band, however, with very low fluxes...

ACCEPTED TO APJL Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 10/09/06 A LYMAN BREAK GALAXY CANDIDATE AT z ∼ 9 1

We report the discovery of a z ∼ 9 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidate, selected from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey as a J-dropout with J110 H160 = 1.7. Spitzer/IRAC photometry reveals that the galaxy has a blue H160 3.6 μm color, and a spectral break between 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We interpret this break as the Balmer break, and derive a best-fit photometric redshift of z ∼ 9. We use Monte Carlo ...

SUBMITTED TO APJ Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 6/22/04

We propose that angular momentum transfer from the baryons to the Dark Matter (DM) during the early stages of galaxy formation can flatten the halo inner density profile and modify the halo dynamics. We compute the phase-space distribution function of DM halos, that corresponds to the density and anisotropy profiles obtained from N-body simulations in the concordance cosmology. We then describe...

Observing Cold Gas in Submillimeter Galaxies: Detection of Co (1!0) Emission in Smm J13120+4242 with the Green Bank Telescope

We report the first detection of CO (1!0) emission from a submillimeter-selected galaxy, using the Green Bank Telescope. We identify the line in the spectrum of SMM J13120+4242 as a broad emission feature at z 1⁄4 3:408, with VFWHM 1⁄4 1040 190 km s . If the observed CO (1!0) line profile arises from a single object and not several merging objects, then the CO (4!3)/CO (1!0) brightness temperat...

Molecular Gas in the Z=2.565 Submillimeter Galaxy Smm J14011+0252

We report the detection of CO(3→2) emission from the submillimeter–selected luminous galaxy SMMJ14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z = 2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5×1010h 75...
